Keyword Searching

If the words you use for a subject search don't find what you want, try a KEYWORDS search.

If you are searching the library catalog for a book or DVD, the catalog will search for your keyword terms in the titles, subjects, contents, and other fields of the works it contains.

If you are searching a database for a periodical article or other document, the database will search for your keyword terms in the article titles, publication titles, and abstracts of all the documents it contains.

For example, if you remember a title that includes the words “society” and “educational,” a KEYWORDS search could help you. You could enter society and educational  to find every item that mentions both of those words.

 When selecting keywords:

  • Choose the most significant words that are likely to appear in your document. Avoid unnecessary words.
  • In nearly every search, your terms should be limited to nouns.
  • Write one or more sentences about your topic and then underline the important words.
    • Example: What kind of treatment is used for children who have asthma or bronchitis?
  • Consider using relevant synonyms, related, or broader terms:
    • e.g., respiratory diseases
  • Check your spelling!
