What Books and DVDs Does LCCC's Library Have?

LCCC's library catalog contains information on the books, ebooks, DVDs, and more in your library.

You can search for one of these items if you know its author, title, subject, keywords, or call number. Your result will give you enough information to locate the item on a shelf.

For information on a particular topic when you don’t know the author or title of a particular book, perform a SUBJECT search.

Do not confuse a book by a particular person (its author) with a book about that person (its subject). Books by Ralph Waldo Emerson are found by an AUTHOR search. Books about him are found by a SUBJECT search.

If the words you use for a subject search don't find what you want, try a KEYWORDS search. In this mode, you can search for words that are likely to appear in a work’s title, subject, contents, or other fields.

For example, if you remember a title that includes the words “society” and “educational,” a KEYWORDS search could help you. You could enter society and educational  to find every record that mentions both of those words.

Find a Book on the Shelf

    ·         All books and audiovisual items are shelved according to their subject.

    ·       Letters and numbers on a white label on the outside of each item indicate the precise location and, therefore, subject of each work.

    ·         These letters and numbers are the “call number.”

    ·       Our library uses the Library of Congress classification system (“LC”) to designate the call numbers.

    • Items in the LC System have call numbers that begin with one or more letters:

                            PS                                                                              M

                            2103                                                                          141.3

                            S37                                                                             P41

The PS indicates a work on American literature.                 The M indicates a musical score.

Finding a Book with a Library of Congress Call Number

    • The letters on the first line are arranged alphabetically.
    • Find the correct area in the library. Locate the first letter of the call number (e.g., H).
    • Next look for the second letter, if there is one. H comes before HA; HM comes after HJ and before HX.

    • These call numbers are in correct order:

                            H                    HB                  HG                  HT

                            437                 721                 52                   4278

                            S32                 A48                M6                  T844

    • Sometimes the second line of an LC call number has a decimal number:
    • Books that have a decimal in the second line, like the second, third, and fourth examples below, will be shelved after all the books that have the same classification letter(s) and numbers, but no decimal.

    • These call numbers are arranged in the order in which their books would be shelved:

PS                   PS                   PS                  PS                  PS                  PS

                            4528                4528                4528.1             4528.1            4528.2             4529

                            L8                    S97                 A38                 S37                G8                   M6

    • The third line of a Library of Congress call number begins with a letter.
    • The numbers following this letter are considered a decimal when locating a book on the shelf.

    • Here is a row of books with LC call numbers, filed in correct order:

                         HM                  HM                  HM                  HM                  HM

                         238                 238                  238                 238                  238

                         B8                   G6                   G68                 G9                  T4
