Create and recognize citations in the correct MLA format
When you borrow facts, opinions, theories, quotations, graphs, drawings, or any other work created by another person, you will create a "citation" for each of those works.
A citation lists a work's author, title, date, and some other information in a particular order and with specific punctuation.
In addition to giving credit to the people who created the information or ideas you borrowed, citations will lead your readers to the actual work you used if they want more information about something you mentioned in your assignment.
When you use the MLA (Modern Language Association) style to write a research paper, you will create a citation for each resource you consulted and compile your citations on a page at the end of your paper and title that page "Works Cited."
Important considerations when creating a citation for your Works Cited page:
- the components of your citations (author, title, date, etc.)
- the order in which they appear (last name first for the first author, title after authors, etc.)
- use of abstracts, excerpts, and reprints
Important considerations when creating your Works Cited page:
- Create your Works Cited page before writing your parenthetical documentation
- List your citations must be in alphabetical order
- Begin the first line of each citation at the left margin and indent the remaining lines
- Capitalize every important word of the title
- End each citation with a period

If an article in a database originally appeared in a periodical in paper format, the first part of the citation is for the article's original publication in paper. The rest of the citation is for the online database in which the article was reprinted and accessed.
